Nyan Cat is a YouTube video I found yesterday.  Since I found it to be a unique video, I decided to write about it today.  I had never heard of video before doing some keyword research to find a topic that pet people might be interested in reading about.

Apparently, a lot of people are familiar with the Youtube video which started out in April 2011 and still exists as an extremely popular and copied YouTube video.  A Japanese pop song was added in a newer version and remains in most versions of later videos.  There are also numerous Nyan games available.

Nyan Cat Breakout Search Term

Yes, a breakout keyword which means it is an extremely hot keyword on the internet right now with about 673 thousand searches monthly. So I am certainly well behind the curve with my knowledge of the video phenomenon.

I really am not able to comprehend why this particula animated cat vidoe is so popular. Maybe it is the cuteness of the animated cat with the body of a Pop Tart running across the screen to nowhere. The cute animated cat  never seems to reach any defined destination in most of the versions I viewed on Youtube. But the addictiveness of the video keeps you watching if for nothing else than to see if anything will happen.  Of course as a first time viewer, I did expect the Nyan to reach some sort of destination or for the video to tell some sort of story. But, of course, it did not.   Trust me.

The endless nyan just keeps running across the screen with the same annoying and nyan lyrics playing the whole time. But I still watched the video for a full three and a half minutes.  I wonder how many of the recorded viewers for this popular animated cat Youtube video are actually first time viewers.  I cannot imagine anyone wanting to view the video more than once.  But then, that is just one person’s opinion.

Many Variations of the Original Nyan Cat Video

The Youtube cat video’s popularity has created somewhat of a Nyan  culture on the internet and especially in YouTube. There are many many versions of the nyan song which is so annoying in its original version.  Yet newer versions of the cat song I find to be equally annoying and monotonous.  Most use the original song and just tweak it to match the theme of the video.  Therefore, no truly original version differing much from the annoying version is created. The versions range from a Nyan  disco version to an eighteenth century version and many versions falling in between these categories.

There are a number of videos with various themes such as Christmas or the Nyan falling in love.  The video about falling in love is the only video I viewed with anything close to a plot being used to keep you watching.  But the plot of that video may be too disturbing for some.   Also available are videos about Nyan nail art, a Guitar Hero game, a Nyan fire alarm, and Nyan drum or violin covers.

It seems that some have too much spare time. lol.

Oh no, the Nyan cult has now invaded the dog world.  What is next?

So is the breakout popularity of Nyan Cat videos due to the  reportedly but questionable cleverly designed constant annoying movement across the screen of a cat with the body of a Pop Tart? Yes it has the body of a Pop Tart! Or is it the annoying song that keeps playing over and over and over and over, etc? Or could it be our fascination with anything having to do with cats and now even dogs?   I vote for the curious nature of human beings who just have to know what happens.

In any event, the joke is on us.  The Nyan is a cat to nowhere having the body and personality of a Pop Tart and with the most annoying music ever created.  It may not be as bad as the sound of fingernails moving across a blackboard.  But I would say it runs a close second!
